Cottage Blue House Trim

Turning our old home into our little cottage has been so exhausting, neverending, and so satisfying! We’re finally getting around to the “fun part” which I would say are the finishing touches. *Applause*!

I want our home to be fun, and unique, and I want to be brave since no one has a house like ours. That said, a big step in making the exterior come together and reflect my style on the inside meant to paint the window panes and doors! When it came to deciding on my next project I realized that I need to focus on completing the outside so we can then work our way in and keep the theme.

Here’s my Instagram reel of painting my doorway:

Picking a blue color took some time and my Pinterest was full of all the options which can be even more overwhelming sometimes. Here are the pins that I was drawn toward!

HOW DREAMY is this?? I think this was my most referenced picture with the blue trim. Now, how to get those dreamy roses to grow all over my house?

I wish I had characteristic shingles but I was able to get a pretty good idea of what my house could look like with this example.

This gives me such coastal vibes and the tone of this blue is perfect

I don’t love this color as much it looks more turquoise but I still love the vibe and the shape of the house is similar to mine.

I went to Home Depot and grabbed a bunch of paint samples, taped them to my window to see what I liked and I hated all of them haha I was grabbing from the “blue” section. I went back and grabbed more from the grays but the grays that were closest to the purple because I think the perfect “cottage blue” has a purple/gray undertone.

The color I chose….I have to be honest I don’t like the name at all but don’t let it scare you haha It’s “Blue Dolphin”-Behr. The description of the color is: “Dolphin Blue is a mid-tone, gray, twilight blue with a lavender undertone.” The undertone is perfect and it looks even lovelier in person.

I got a primer to paint on my windows first, I got my exterior paint, and went to work! I tried using the mask and peel stuff I’ve heard about because it sounded enticing to have a primer and a way to peel off the paint all in one but it seemed to be messier and take more time. Maybe if you had one small project vs. painting every window outside your house it would work better.

I think the blue works so well with the original characteristic front door!

Next up we painted the whole exterior of the house and gave it all a refresh before painting the windows. We painted our whole exterior ourselves for $500 and it was a lot of work, I won’t sugarcoat it, but it was so worth it!

I only bought one gallon of my trim paint and I still have lots left! I painted 14 windows, 1 doorway, and two french doors so I think it was SO worth paying $40 for a gallon of paint to transform the whole look and feel of our house!

Here are all the supplies I used for my cottage window and door transformation!

Thanks so much for being here, friend, and thanks for reading!

xoxo,
