Cottage Blue Kitchen

We live in an old home where charm and character can thrive, but it’s taken me just about four years to get there. We have done all the renovating ourselves which we’re proud of and exhausted by! Living in your home during demolition and renovation is not for the faint of heart but after all this time we are FINALLY at the home stretch.

What was one of the hardest decisions for our kitchen? Paint color.

I personally hate picking out paint colors. I’m getting to the point where I just want to close my eyes and pick a paint swatch because it can be so exhausting.

I started out wanting a cottage blue kitchen but abandoned my gut feeling and switched to green for some reason. I lived with a ‘‘Test’’ green color for a while that took me 6 months to realize how awful it looked. Then I was back to blue which can be overwhelming since blue can have Grey, purple, or green undertones.

This is my kitchen at Golden hour and like any room or paint color everything can look different with lighting.

I started out by gathering inspiration and saved any Pinterest picture that caught my eye.

After getting paint samples, trying them out in different lighting, and picking one of the lighter ones I ended up choosing “Lullaby’’ by Sherwin Williams.

Now is it a color someone probably named for a nursery instead of a kitchen?…most likely. I wanted a lighter blue since our kitchen lighting isn't the greatest and it doesn't pull too Grey or green.

I told you that green was awful…

I started to paint my shiplap to see how it looked and lived with it for a week or two before committing to paint my cabinets.

You can see that sad little light over our sink was the only light for this entire side of the kitchen before we added canned lighting and beadboard ceiling.

Even with the awful lighting I still fell in love with this blue and moved forward with painting our cabinets. Our cabinets are ikea so I followed a tutorial on prepping and painting these cabinets the right way for the longevity and durability we need.

I added crown molding, a new light above the sink, and actual countertops sure helped a lot too!

The spice rack is an old wooden piece I got from my Grandma and the spices fit perfectly!

I added this gold ikea bar below the hood for all my copper accents which compliment the blue so well.

I chose a unlaquered brass Bridge faucet with matching garbage disposal button and sink sprayer!

The knobs are brass from Ikea and have held up so well!

Our kitchen feels so cozy and I'm excited to actually decorate and figure out my style even more! I picture mixed patterns and just a cozy unique feel!

Would you have a characteristic blue kitchen? As always thanks for reading, friend!

Xoxo,
